Russian energy giant Gazprom's average daily natural gas supplies to Europe increased by nearly 23% in June compared to the same month last year, Reuters reported on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.

According to Reuters’ calculations, which were based on data from European gas network operator Entsog and Gazprom's daily reports, the figure remains 8.6% lower than May's average due to planned maintenance on the TurkStream pipeline.

The average daily volume for June reached 81.8 million cubic meters (mcm), down from 89.5 mcm in May but significantly higher than the 66.8 mcm recorded in June 2023.

The rise in June follows a significant drop in Russian gas supplies to Europe in 2023, which was a consequence of the political fallout from the Ukraine conflict.

Europe was previously Gazprom's primary export market, but the company has since shifted its focus to China, with pipeline gas imports there reaching 22.7 bcm in 2023, a nearly 50% increase from 2022.

According to Gazprom data and Reuters calculations, Russia supplied Europe with a total of 63.8 bcm of gas in 2022, which further declined to 28.3 bcm in 2023, a decrease of over 55%.  At their peak in 2018-2019, annual gas flows to Europe reached between 175 bcm and 180 bcm.

So far this year, Gazprom has exported a total of approximately 15.5 bcm of gas to Europe, according to Reuters.

Gazprom has not released its own monthly statistics since the beginning of 2023.
