Trans Mountain announced on Monday it had partnered with Hifi Engineering to implement a state-of-the-art fibre optic network for comprehensive monitoring and advanced leak detection on its expansion project for 10years.

The high-fidelity distributed sensing (HDS) system will provide additional protection for the pipeline, complementing existing leak detection measures.

The hybrid fibre optic network, consisting of a telecommunications cable, specialised optical sensing fibre, and dual micro duct conduit, will enable real-time monitoring of the pipeline's integrity.

According to the announcement, the cables will allow Hifi to provide 24/7 monitoring support from its operations centre, ensuring prompt detection and response to any potential issues.

“Trans Mountain is committed to continuous improvement in all facets of our operation,” said Jason Balasch, Vice President, Business Development and Commercial Services. Balasch added that the agreement will provide their system with an extra layer of leak detection and monitoring, complementing the two monitoring systems currently in use.

The deployment of the HDS system marks a significant milestone in pipeline monitoring technology. It is the longest fully distributed fibre optic sensing installation on a multi-product liquids pipeline worldwide. The system can accurately pinpoint the location of leaks, ground disturbances, and security threats, providing valuable insights for pipeline operators.

Trans Mountain and Hifi were recently recognised by the Fibre Optic Sensing Association (FOSA) for their innovative approach to pipeline monitoring, receiving the Project of the Year award.
