The ongoing wildfires in North Dakota have negatively impacted oil production in the U.S. state, according to the North Dakota Pipeline Authority.

The agency said on Tuesday that the wildfires resulted in a drop in oil output by approximately 60,000 to 90,000 barrels per day (bpd).

North Dakota is the third-largest oil producer in the country, with daily output reaching 1.161 million bpd in July. However, the current events could curtail its potential to deliver sufficient oil and gas to customers.

"Associated wellhead natural gas production today is estimated to be down 0.17-0.26 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd)," Justin Kringstad, the director of the North Dakota Pipeline Authority, said in a statement emailed to Reuters on Tuesday.

North Dakota has been grappling with up to six wildfires since Oct. 6, resulting in two fatalities, according to local media reports.

Earlier on Tuesday, Exxon Mobil announced that it had temporarily shut down some oil wells and production sites in North Dakota due to multiple incidents of wildfires, adding that their teams were working with emergency responders to assess the damage caused by the fires.

“We will work with industry partners and the local power co-ops to safely restart wells and sites over the coming days," Exxon said in a statement.
