US President Donald Trump called on Monday for the revival of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, even though its developer has already abandoned the project.

“The company building the Keystone XL Pipeline that was viciously jettisoned by the incompetent Biden Administration should come back to America, and get it built - NOW!” Trump said in a post on his social media platform. He promised that his administration would offer “Easy approvals, almost immediate start!”

“If not them, perhaps another pipeline company,” Trump added. “We want the Keystone XL Pipeline built!”

The $8 billion, 1,200-mile (1,931-kilometer) pipeline was designed to carry Canadian oil sands crude to Nebraska. The project became a major point of contention in environmental debates during the Obama administration, which rejected it in 2015. The project has remained politically divisive ever since.

Trump had previously sought to revive the pipeline during his first term in office, but the Biden administration revoked the permit allowing the pipeline to cross the U.S.-Canada border just hours after President Joe Biden took office in January 2021.

South Bow Corp., the company that emerged from TC Energy Corp. and was responsible for the pipeline, has made it clear it is not interested in reviving the project. Parts of the pipeline system, which would have run through Alberta, Montana, South Dakota, and Nebraska, have already been dismantled, and key permits have expired.

“We have moved on from the Keystone XL project,” South Bow spokeswoman Katie Stavinoha said Monday evening. “We continue to engage with customers to develop options to increase Canadian oil supplies to meet growing U.S. demand.”

Trump recently revoked a Biden administration executive order that had canceled a 2019 permit for the pipeline, at least theoretically putting it back into play. However, Canada continues to face the threat of new tariffs on its exports to the U.S., including a 10% levy on crude oil. Trump has delayed those tariffs until early March.

Trump has long argued that the U.S. should rely on its own oil and gas supplies, reducing dependence on foreign resources.

The former president’s comments reflect his ongoing efforts to revive stalled energy projects. Earlier this month, he pledged to complete the Constitution pipeline, which was intended to transport natural gas to New York, despite the developer abandoning the project in 2020.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt linked the two pipeline efforts during an interview on Fox News Monday night. She highlighted Trump’s push for more energy infrastructure.

“We want the Keystone XL pipeline built,” Leavitt said. “He wants a pipeline built in the northeast in New England, where I am from, where we have some of the highest electricity and utility rates in the country.”
