German gas network operator Thyssengas GmbH has initiated work on the development of hydrogen pipelines, a crucial step in the nation's hydrogen core network, which received final approval in October.

As part of the 9,040-kilometer hydrogen core network, Thyssengas plans 35 projects involving the construction and conversion of approximately 1,100 kilometers of pipelines.

The aim is to connect major industrial hubs and mid-sized companies in Muensterland, the Ruhr region, and the Rhineland to hydrogen infrastructure.

"Our most time-critical H2 projects are now moving into the implementation phase, meaning the necessary planning and approval processes," said CEO Thomas Goessmann.

For projects with later start dates and undefined implementation paths, Thyssengas is collaborating with potential hydrogen offtakers, policymakers, and authorities to make them market-ready through further network development.

Arne Dammer, Head of Strategy and Innovation at Thyssengas, identified three key factors for the hydrogen market's ramp-up: binding commitments, early planning, and broader distribution of hydrogen.

According to Dammer, non-binding commitments to future hydrogen needs should be formalized into binding contracts.

He also emphasized that future connections should be planned during the core network's development to efficiently integrate regional hydrogen customers. Additionally, the distribution of hydrogen from the core network to broader regions needs to be considered early in the planning stages.
