Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Thursday inaugurated a new 24-inch diameter, 31-kilometer transmission pipeline to boost gas supply to Karachi’s western region in Pakistan.

SSGC Managing Director Imran Maniar said at the inauguration ceremony that the pipeline from MVA ACPL to SMS Surjani will address low-pressure issues faced by industrial customers in the region.

The project, which costs 3.859 billion rupees (about $46 million), will separate high-pressure industrial consumers in the SITE and Hub industrial areas from low-pressure domestic and commercial customers.

Additionally, it will increase gas supply to the area by 269 million standard cubic feet per day, meeting current demand of 130-140 MMSCFD and projected growth of 80-100 MMSCFD.

According to the company’s press release details, the pipeline will also feed a 16-inch, 5-kilometer line to Madinat-al-Hikmah, part of SSGC’s master plan to expand Karachi’s distribution network.

The project includes upgrades to the Surjani Stepdown assembly for better gas control and reduced unaccounted-for-gas.

Maniar praised the team for completing the project on time despite extreme heat, adding that the just-completed project will reduce gas loss by lowering excessive pressure in the domestic sector and improving supply to industries.

The pipeline project was delivered through a collaborative effort involving multiple departments, including Projects and Construction, Planning and Development, Transmission, Finance, Procurement, Stores, Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Assurance, Legal and Estate Management, Security Services and Counter Gas Theft Operations, and Corporate Communication.
