A likely gas leak has put the 77-km gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia, called the Balticconnector and launched in 2020, out of commission.

The undersea pipeline experienced a pressure drop in the wee hours of Sunday, which prompted system operators on both sides to cut off the gas, TSO Elering, national transmission system operator for electricity and natural gas with headquarters in Tallinn, Estonia, said.

Finnish gas system operator Gasgrid said that the pressure started to drop a little before 2 a.m.

But it was also said that Finland's gas supply remained stable Sunday morning and was being ensured with the help of the Inkoo LNG terminal.

The pipeline, which can export in either direction depending on where demand is greatest, was transporting a volume of around 30 gigawatt hours of gas per day from Finland to Estonia at the time of the incident, Janne Gronlund of Gasgrid said.
