Residents Sue PETRONAS & Government Over Devastating Putra Heights Gas Pipeline Explosion
Thirty-six residents of a suburban neighbourhood devastated by a gas pipeline explosion six months ago filed a civil suit Friday against Malaysia’s state-owned energy firm PETRONAS Gas, the government, and three other entities.
Filed Oct. 17 at the High Court of Malaya by residents from the Topaz and Citrine areas of Taman Putra Harmoni in Putra Heights, the lawsuit lists PETRONAS Gas Bhd., developers Hong & Hong Homes Sdn Bhd., and Pinterest Ventures Sdn Bhd., the Subang Jaya City Council, and the Malaysian government as defendants.
The plaintiffs are seeking damages for property loss, physical injuries, and psychological trauma stemming from the 8:07 a.m. gas pipeline explosion and fire on April 1, 2025.
In their statement of claim, the plaintiffs alleged the explosion originated from a gas transmission pipeline owned and operated by PETRONAS Gas. The blast reportedly sent a plume 40 meters high with temperatures reaching 1,000 degrees Celsius.
"Most of us are still renting homes elsewhere," said plaintiff Loh Poh Heng, 43. "While we've received government aid for up to a year, it doesn't erase the trauma or the uncertainty we live with."
The plaintiffs are seeking special, general, aggravated and exemplary damages.
Another plaintiff, Chen Ka Kim, 62, said the lawsuit was about accountability, not just compensation.
"A gas pipeline was dangerously close to our homes," Chen said, claiming safeguards were inadequate and that investigations into the blast were "opaque."
"We are not only seeking compensation but also the truth and a systemic change in how public safety is managed," he said.
A Selangor government briefing to a parliamentary committee on August 8 stated that 511 houses in the vicinity were damaged in the explosion.
