The Canada Energy Regulator (CER), on Wednesday, May 15, ordered TC Energy’s NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd (NGTL) to further reduce pressure on its Grande Prairie Mainline gas pipeline near Edson, Alberta.

According to a Reuters report, the regulator’s directive follows the pipeline rupture rapture incident on April 16, 2024.

The pipeline segment reportedly ruptured and ignited, sparking a wildfire in a remote area around Edson. However, no casualties were reported.

While TC Energy reported its NGTL gas pipeline system, which includes the Grande Prairie Mainline, returned to normal operations last month, the cause of the rupture remains under investigation.

The CER’s pressure reduction order will stay in place until TC Energy can demonstrate the pipeline’s safety at a higher pressure level.

Despite the restriction, TC Energy assures there are currently no service disruptions on the NGTL system and no anticipated interruptions to natural gas delivery.

The NGTL system is a key natural gas gathering and transportation network for TC Energy, moving resources from the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin to markets across Canada and the United States.
