The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration announced Tuesday that it will award $196 million in grants to help replace aging natural gas pipelines across 20 states.

The funding, backed by President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will support 60 modernization projects aimed at replacing old, leak-prone pipes that pose safety hazards, inflate energy costs, and contribute to environmental harm.

“Aging, leak-prone natural gas pipes can be dangerous, drive up energy costs for families, and harm the environment, which is why the Biden-Harris Administration is supporting funds to replace aging pipelines,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement.

“That’s why the Biden-Harris Administration is supporting funds to replace aging pipelines.”

White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi echoed Buttigieg’s sentiments, adding that the Biden administration was “making significant progress” in its efforts to cut various types of pollution, including super-pollutants like methane.

According to Zaidi, the government’s project also aims to create thousands of good jobs while lowering energy costs for US residents. Sources and related content.
