Penspen, a global energy consultancy, has been awarded a contract by Conexus Baltic Grid to assess the feasibility of blending hydrogen into its existing natural gas pipeline network in Latvia.

Penspen’s integrity team will evaluate the potential impacts of hydrogen on the pipeline’s steel properties and existing defects to ensure safe operations.

The company will leverage its expertise in hydrogen integration and pipeline safety to provide recommendations for mitigating risks and optimizing the infrastructure for a cleaner energy future.

“We are excited to be working with Conexus Baltic Grid to help them transition to a hydrogen-based energy system,” said Ali Alani, Director of Asset Integrity at Penspen. “This project aligns with our commitment to supporting the global energy transition and promoting sustainable energy solutions.”

Rolands Trenko, Project Manager at Conexus Baltic Grid, added that Penspen’s knowledge and experience in pipeline analysis will be crucial in adapting their infrastructure for hydrogen blending.

“We look forward to collaborating with them to achieve a safe and sustainable energy future,” he added.

Penspen has a long history of supporting energy operators in transitioning to lower-carbon fuels and extending the life of existing infrastructure. The company’s expertise in materials engineering, pipeline analysis, and hydrogen integration will be instrumental in helping Conexus Baltic Grid realize its clean energy goals.
