Greece Pledges Commitment to TAP Pipeline Expansion and Regional Energy Security
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday affirmed his government’s unwavering support for the expansion of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).
The cross-border pipeline is part of the Southern Gas Corridor, which comprises 3,500 kilometers of pipelines transporting gas from the Caspian Sea to European countries.
During a ceremony launching Greece's pavilion at the COP29 climate conference in Baku on Wednesday, Mitsotakis emphasized Greece's "strategic commitment" to ensuring regional energy security by backing the expansion of the TAP project, which was completed in 2020.
The Trans Adriatic Pipeline transports natural gas from Azerbaijan to Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, and Southeastern Europe. According to Mitsotakisto, TAP expansion is necessary to meet growing energy demands.
Looking toward the future, the Prime Minister pointed to Greece's focus on the evolution of energy infrastructure. Mitsotakis further stressed the importance of integrating electricity infrastructure into the broader vision for regional energy security.
