Three people were seriously injured in an explosion caused by a gas pipeline leak in the HSR Layout 7th sector of Bangalore on Thursday.

According to a report published by Free Press Journal, the incident occurred when the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) accidentally broke the pipeline while digging a road, causing gas to leak into nearby homes.

The incident is attributed to unauthorized third-party damage to the GAIL Gas network, which supplies natural gas to the area.

In a statement, GAIL Gas, the company that operates the network, said that a local contractor working for the BWSSB caused the damage without prior consent or notification to the gas company and fled the site after the incident, leaving the gas leak unattended.

"The gas caught fire in the nearby dwelling area wherein 2 occupants were reported to suffer minor burn injuries apparently due to the above," the statement said.

The GAIL Gas Quick Response Team (QRT) and fire fighting team reached the site within five minutes of the incident and extinguished the fire, containing the situation.

GAIL also urged all residents and authorities of Bangalore to immediately advise all contractors to give prior intimation to the company before executing any digging work near the gas pipeline. The company also requested that any such incidents be reported to their toll-free number.

"It is also urged to exercise extreme care while undertaking any such digging work near the vicinity of the Natural Gas Pipeline," the statement added.
