FERC Updates Regulations to Boost Cybersecurity Natural Gas Pipeline Industry
The U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has issued a final rule to update its regulations, incorporating the latest version of business practice standards for interstate natural gas pipelines.
The new rule, effective Feb. 7, 2025, aims to enhance the industry's efficiency, reliability, and cybersecurity, according to FERC’s announcement on Monday.
The rule adopts Version 4.0 of the Standards for Business Practices of Interstate Natural Gas Pipelines, as approved by the Wholesale Gas Quadrant (WGQ) of the North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB).
This update consolidates existing cybersecurity standards into a single manual, streamlining processes and strengthening protections against cyber threats.
"The implementation of these standards will significantly bolster the natural gas industry's resilience and security," said a FERC spokesperson, adding that adopting the latest practices will ensure “reliable flow of natural gas to consumers.”
The FERC's decision comes as the U.S. government continues to prioritize cybersecurity across various sectors.
In November, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) proposed a rule to enforce cyber risk management and reporting requirements for specific surface transportation owners and operators.
The proposed rule, which seeks public comment until Feb. 5, 2025, aligns with the broader push to enhance cybersecurity in critical infrastructure.
