Feds Call for the Construction of New Gas Pipelines in the United States
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the independent agency responsible for regulating interstate transmission of electricity, natural gas and oil, is calling for more natural gas consumption along with an improved natural gas pipeline network to help curb greenhouse gas emissions and meet global climate goals.
FERC Chairwoman Cheryl LaFleur, anticipating opposition to the shift toward natural gas, said "I think that our nation is going to have to grapple with our acceptance of [natural] gas generation and [natural] gas pipelines if we expect to achieve our climate and environmental goals.”
LaFleur believes that progress on climate goals is possible - “but only if we’re willing to build the infrastructure … and build the energy markets".
