Enbridge Cleans Up Majority of Oil Spill from Its Line 6 Pipeline in Wisconsin
Canadian pipeline major, Enbridge Inc., has recovered approximately 60% of the nearly 265,000-liter oil spill that occurred at its Line 6 pipeline in Wisconsin last month.
An Enbridge employee discovered the spill on Nov. 11 during a routine inspection at the Enbridge Cambridge Station, west of Milwaukee. The incident was caused by a faulty pump transfer pipe, which has since been repaired.
“We are working closely with state and federal regulators to clean up the spill and restore the affected area,” said Enbridge spokesperson Juli Kellner.
The company is currently removing contaminated soil from the pump station and plans to continue cleanup and restoration efforts in collaboration with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The oil spill occurred during the same week that Wisconsin regulators approved permits for Enbridge's plan to reroute the aging Line 5 pipeline around the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa reservation.
However, the tribe has filed a lawsuit challenging the legality of the permits, arguing that Enbridge failed to adequately address potential harm to state waterways and wetlands.
