ABB India has completed a comprehensive modernization of the automation and monitoring systems for Bharat Petroleum Corporation’s Vadinar-Bina Pipeline, the company announced Tuesday.

The 935-kilometer (580-mile) cross-country pipeline is a critical piece of India’s energy infrastructure. It currently transports 7.8 million metric tonnes of crude oil annually to the Bina refinery, playing a pivotal role in meeting the nation’s rising energy demands and ensuring regional fuel stability.

The modernization program focused on replacing legacy infrastructure with the ABB Ability SCADAvantage system. This upgrade included the installation of new SCADA servers at both the Vadinar and Bina terminals, providing operators with enhanced real-time data and granular control over the vast transit network.

As part of the technical overhaul, ABB replaced 35 Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) distributed across pumping, pigging, and sectionalizing valve stations. These units are essential for monitoring the physical conditions of the pipeline and ensuring safe, efficient operations across diverse geographical terrains.

Beyond mechanical and hardware upgrades, the project significantly strengthened the pipeline's cyber resilience.

As industrial infrastructure becomes increasingly digitized, ABB implemented advanced network protection and system hardening protocols. These measures, combined with centralized monitoring, are intended to protect the pipeline from digital threats and minimize the risk of operational downtime.

The successful delivery of this program comes at a time when India is prioritizing the integration of "Industry 4.0" solutions into its legacy energy networks.

By enhancing the automation of the Vadinar-Bina Pipeline, BPCL aims to optimize throughput while maintaining the highest safety standards for one of the country's most vital energy arteries.
