Next-Generation Vibroacoustic Technology: Field Validation for Real-Time Pipeline Integrity Monitoring

This work presents recent advancements in vibroacoustic technology (VT) for pipeline integrity monitoring, with a focus on enhanced flexibility and simplified deployment on existing infrastructure.

The new hardware consists of externally mounted sensor blocks based on an interferometric principle, capable of sensing Vibroacoustic waves inside the pipeline through measurements of material deformation. The sensors are installed non-invasively on onshore pipelines, requiring only contact with the pipe wall and no interaction with the transported fluid, enabling safe and rapid deployment. These units transmit real-time data to centralized processing servers.

The system enables continuous detection and localization of leaks and Third-Party Interference (TPI) without operational interruptions, maintaining the accuracy of conventional VT solutions.

Field validation on a 40 km jet-fuel pipeline confirmed reliable performance under various conditions, demonstrating improved scalability and cost-efficiency for pipeline monitoring applications.
