We are sad to tell the pipeline community that Ian Corder, formerly in the research team at the Engineering Research Station ('ERS'), Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK, passed away peacefully on Friday, 13th March, 2026.

Ian, amongst many things, was part of the team that developed the novel 'epoxy-filled shell repair' and pioneered much of the early work on the risk analysis of gas pipelines – all work that survives today.

Ian was one of the most popular of colleagues – everybody knew him, and liked him. We all did – it was easy. He worked in research, but his practical knowledge set him apart. If you wanted it to work – get Ian. From that environment he made a huge contribution to the gas pipeline industry in the UK, with his pragmatic approach, and he is remembered fondly by all those involved, including the higher echelons. His happy approach to work disguised a deep thinker. Ian’s legacy will endure among all those fortunate enough to call him a friend. His inventive spirit, warmth and unfailing good humour made every day brighter.  We will carry forward his lessons of optimism.
